[INTERVIEW] 10asia: Kim Junsu│“Musical Mozart healed me” – Part 1

After the interview with Kim Junsu, a passage from Alphonse Daudet’s came up in my mind. I was thinking about the most beautiful of all stars that had lost its way and fall asleep on my shoulder. In 2010, Kim Junsu who had always been shining everywhere, every time, and who seemed to be endlessly so high and so far away became a falling star and appeared in front of us with <Mozart!>. Instead of words, the songs he sang became tears and those tears became fertile material to the strong roots that would begin to grow on the ground. Moreover, when the audience saw Kim Junsu throw 120% of himself into Mozart, crying out ‘Can’t Escape my Destiny’, they finally started to see him as the way he is. It took him 7 years to find his name and open his heart. If this interview is meaningful, it’s because it lets you hear about all those years through his own voice.

10. You have the premiere of your third musical <Elisabeth> ahead. Comparing to the time that you have started while knowing nothing, did you get to feel more comfortable.

Kim Junsu: I have practiced everything but I haven’t stood on the stage myself yet so I don’t really know. At the premiere <Mozart!> I realized that the rehearsal and the real stage were totally different. The communication with the audience, the lighting, the stage setting, all are different. Fortunately, now I can make a rough sketch in my mind, ‘this kind of feeling will come out in this kind of ambience’.

“Nowadays I only listen to musical to the point that it becomes big problem”

10. When you began your musical career with <Mozart!>, you must have been disconcerted yet found it amazing.

Kim Junsu: It was the first time in my life. I was very unfamiliar with this genre itself. I have heard a lot that the audience and the persons concerned didn’t have a very good point of view about entertainer doing musical. Therefore, I was also curious about how people would see me. However, the music (in musical) was like a new world to me. There was an atmosphere and a magnificence that I couldn’t feel in pop music. The best thing was that, in musical, all are live music. Since then, I started to go watch musicals when I had free time. I only listen to musical to the point that it becomes big problem. I have been heavily influenced (Laugh)

10. How did you felt when you watched musical as an audience for the first time?

Kim Junsu: I watched (Im) Taekyung-hyung’s first performance. Although Taekyung-hyung is a veteran, when he came out as Mozart, I shivered. I had this kind of thought, “When we were practicing, hyung committed mistake in this part” (laugh), which made me anxious. However, as hyung safely overcame it, I sighed with relief. I also wondered how I would do on stage. I was worried about myself too. Ahaha. That time, wow, my nerves were so on edge.

10. It seems that you couldn’t watch it as 100% audience.

Kim Junsu: Because there were very difficult times. It was my first activity after a gap of 6-8 months. In fact, when a person or a group does something for the first time, it’s all difficult and tense. Plus, it was an unfamiliar genre that I have never tried before, there were a lot of pressures.

10. I wonder how you started a work that you didn’t have any kind of experience nor feeling about.

Kim Junsu: I rejected [the offer] twice. The first time I had a talk with CEO Eom Hong Hyun, I said, “I can’t do it.” (Everyone burst out laughing) After that, he contacted me again and told me to listening to the music first. I watched the DVD and ‘Can’t Escape my Destiny’ caused a commotion over me. I was like, ‘This kind of music exists!’ (Laugh) Even so, I still said that I couldn’t do it. But after reading the script, I suddenly wanted to do it.

10. Was there something that make you decide to do it?

Kim Junsu: I know that many people said Mozart was a genius composer who has earned a lot of money and had everything. Nonetheless, maybe as a person who also works on music, I saw myself in him who thought that being genius was unhappy. All the lyrics were my heart, were the real story that I wanted to tell. At that time, I couldn’t directly tell that kind of story but I felt that I could sing it out. It made me want to sing.

“I still shed tears every time talking about <Mozart!>”

10. Debuted as a singer, you have sung many songs. Even so, it seems that you have approach the lyrics in<Mozart!> in a particularly intense way.

Kim Junsu: At that time, I was singing about the pain in love. What could an 18-19-year-old boy know about love? (Laugh) Still, the lyrics of TVXQ’s Japanese songs such as ‘Forever Love’ were good. I really liked it when I could convey the emotions that I felt through the song’s lyrics. The songs of <Mozart!> were like that. When I read the lyric of ‘Golden Star’, something burst inside me.

10. What kind of lyrics was it?

Kim Junsu: Worrying about the Prince, the King made the wall higher and firmly closed the doors. But the Prince dreams of the world outside the walls. It says that if you really want the golden star, you must step out to the world beyond the walls. Love is not the imprisonment; love is something that sets you free, this kind of lyric.

10. It seems that it gave supportive strength to both you and Mozart.

Kim Junsu: I was healed while performing. ‘Golden Star’ was sang by the Baroness who acknowledged Mozart’s talent. Actually, that scene only required that Mozart would show such and such kind of feeling. I should have just innocently said ‘Dad, please hear this story’ but I always cried. Although I told myself, “You can’t cry. You can’t cry.” as soon as I heard the lyric, I couldn’t [hold myself from crying]. When I sang ‘Why don’t you love me’, I also cried so much that it interrupted the singing. Talking about that still makes me shed tears.

10. At that time, your situation and the contents of musical fit together. Those true feelings outstood and even some audience who had antipathy toward idols doing musicals began to become interested.

Kim Junsu: I didn’t get to play the leading role after passing through a series of steps. I became Mozart as an idol star. That was the reason I have tried not to do it. If I was a musical actor, I wouldn’t surely have felt that happy about it. Therefore, I hesitated a lot. But I really worked hard with the thought that if I approached it seriously and sincerely, regardless of whether I did it well or not, people wouldn’t hate me. In addition, the actors tried to teach me. Thanks to them, I could focus in performing.

10. What was the reaction of other JYJ’s members who was also in the same situation with you?

Kim Junsu: (Park) Yoochun and (Kim) Jaejoong-hyung also cried while watching. Musical is musical but I think that, regardless of whether I did well or not, they were deeply moved of the fact that I have achieved something. I was the first one who stepped out among 3 of us.

10. It must have been hard to let go of Mozart, as you once said, “<Mozart!> is more than just a musical to me.”

Kim Junsu: ‘I am music’ was the song about the happiness of expressing what you feel through music. Mozart sang that song even until the moment he died. It was really sad. I think I did musical because it was <Mozart!>. Till the day I die, without regard to whatever role I might play, I can say that <Mozart!> was No.1. It’s because I like that musical and because it gave the me, who had no confidence in anything back then, courage and hope. Before, when I was asked who the person I respect is, I used to say that it was King Sejong. I’m sorry but now I’ll say that it’s Mozart. (Laugh)

  1. Jusu found himself with Mozart,he became friend with Mozart through musical. Mozart musical is a gift for Junsu and JYJ.

“Kim Junsu: (Park) Yoochun and (Kim) Jaejoong-hyung also cried while watching. Musical is musical but I think that, regardless of whether I did well or not, they were deeply moved of the fact that I have achieved something. I was the first one who stepped out among 3 of us.”

I can feel the emotions here, how have they felt finally their Junsu found his stage and showed his talent, this must have been big ray of light for them at that time.ok I am tearing up.
Mozart,SKKS I will always thankful to these two projects and Jae for coming out as a Director, all these things brought JYJ forward.

    • i agree with u @zan
Mozart really help Su to stand up and find his confident back
SKKS can makes Chunnie found his talent more on acting
and through Directing, jae became more confident and found new interesting world
the three things that bring our boys back to their life and found the joy in these world

    • i love friends who feel happy for their friend doing well ,instead of comparing themselves and feeling envious and thinking it should be them instead or why him and not me, i am very touched they cry in happiness for Junsu’s sake, and i am super happy Junsu has such true friends who clearly want the best for Junsu. cause Junsu is the same towards them, these three feel like they had made the accomplishment when only one of them does it its all the same to them and that’s just wow , like real blood brothers u win i win u laugh i laugh u cry i cry u do great makes me feel great. JYJ are brothers not just friends.

  2. Mozart and Su really fit together, the lyrics that Su singing during Mozart musical truly show his true feeling
Golden star and ich bin ich music (did i write it with a right letter ?) the song that i think truly describe Su feeling
if i thought about it again almost every project (musical or drama ) that our boys taken can be related with our boys situation

  3. Our Junsu has so matured ^^ I am so proud of him!! Oppa Saranghae ^^

===> I NEED to watch the performance!!

  4. I can see how musical has influence Junsu’s music. I felt it in Fallen leaves, n i love it. Cant wait to hear his new songs, n buy the dvd of Elisabeth (since going to Kor is impossible for me T.T)

  5. I always thought that the lyrics of the Mozart songs were exactly matched to JYJ’s situation. It amazes me that such a role could come to Junsu at just that moment, which was what moved JYJ forward and gave them all confidence.

I also thought SKKS’s message was a match for JYJ, with the world around them all filled with corruption, doing things for a self centered reason and pretending it was for them. JYJ were trying to do something true and really about the music and love.

It seems almost like a miracle that those two projects came along when they did. They face such incredible persecution and injustice but at the same time, there seems to be a force working with them beyond anyone’s imagination.

  6. Junsu come to Wien, Austria the source of Musicals and see the magic your Idol Amadeus Mozart did from an early age, musicals in those centuries are so big Kings, Queens, Princes, and Royals are all the time in attendance. Junsu you might have come from Amadeus and Royalty times, the feelings you have for Mozart is mutual so don’t be bashful about it he is living through you in musicals today to show how good he was and a Genius musician at an early age a writer and a composer as such. Embrace this gift you have now and relive the power of classical musicals you were chosen for a reason.

  7. I’ve always wondered is it junsu who made me full for mozart or is it the opposite????!!!!! I don’t know but I’m watching mozart everyday and never being bored it’s because I feel that he’s talking to me and telling me what he feels T.T

    • “I’m watching mozart everyday and never being bored”
Im in a similar situation. I have a lot of fancams and also the performances from the Musical Concert….i cant get tired of it, i watch it again and again and again and fall inlove with Mozart and Junsu even more…. im so glad that Junsu decided to do Mozart, it was a gift for him, but also for us fans. Mozart has an special meaning to me, it was Junsu’s first big project, and im so proud of it.

  8. “Worrying about the Prince, the King made the wall higher and firmly closed the doors. But the Prince dreams of the world outside the walls. It says that if you really want the golden star, you must step out to the world beyond the walls. Love is not the imprisonment; love is something that sets you free, this kind of lyric.” …..it’s a very JYJ_ish lyrics

“(Park) Yoochun and (Kim) Jaejoong-hyung also cried while watching. Musical is musical but I think that, regardless of whether I did well or not, they were deeply moved of the fact that I have achieved something. I was the first one who stepped out among 3 of us.”
JYJ love and brotherhood, BEING TOGETHER…

  9. Oh My Junsu…. So very, very, proud of you.

What can I say… He is an amazing young man. This interview like the others he has given recently brought tears to my eyes.

More than anything I am so PROFOUNDLY moved that LIFE provided a safe haven in the world of Musicals for Junsu at the most difficult time of his life. The wander of this is truly amazing. Because what came to Junsu was an opportunity so perfectly tailored to his personality, skills, and most of all his incredible talent, it’s as though it was simply orchestrated just for him…. a way for him to “be healed” of all the pain. How beautiful that is! That truly moves me…….

Here are a few of my favorites:

“….It says that if you really want the golden star, you must step out to the world beyond the walls. Love is not the imprisonment; love is something that sets you free, this kind of lyric.” (Mozart gave him a place to escape to, to live a new life, safe haven)

“….All the lyrics were in my heart, were the real story that I wanted to tell. At that time, I couldn’t directly tell that kind of story but felt that I could sing it out. It made me want to sing.” (Mozart gave him a way to voice the pain he was feeling at that time.)

“…I like that musical and because it gave the me, who had no confidence in anything back then, courage and hope.”

AND MOST OF ALL.. “…. I was healed while performing.” (The wander of this is incredible!)

What moves me most about Junsu is that he had the courage to step through a door into what was a complete “unknown” and fully commit himself to doing the very best he could come what may. That’s all one can ask of themselves and that is enough.

Junsu reminds me everyday to move forward fearlessly and to ask myself this… did I give 100%?.. am I giving the very best of myself to this task at this moment? If I can answer yes than I can be proud no matter what the outcome. That’s what this Noona admires most about Junsu and has learned from this young man’s approach to life.

As I think about all the events that had to come together for Junsu to be presented with this opportunity, really I am awestruck. For it lets me know that there is a force in the Universe that balances all the injustice in this world, but only in the fullness of time; when the moment is right.

So believing this I can be forever hopeful because I know Junsu, JJ and Youchun will triumph in the end.

@JYJtack Hi! ^^ Plz RT We are going to trend #StayStrongYoochun tomorrow at 11am EST to support Yoochun. Thank you! ^^ — JYJtack (@JYJtack) » for those who had twitter acc, please support our Chunnie.. *Bow* gabsahamnidaaaa…

  11. I will always associate the musical ‘Mozart’ with Junsu, now; the two seem inseparable 😀 I’m just so proud of Junsu and grateful that this music and Junsu found each other.

  12. always love to read all his interviews, the answers were always new and refreshing.
getting to know him closer and closer.
after rejected it twice “But after reading the script, I suddenly wanted to do it.” *thanks to God you did*
we know junsu, we feel the same, when reading the lirycs we were find it fit with your situation at that time.

    • rejecting it twice means he had lost his confidence at that point in anything, he was scared, but reading the script encouraged him and the desire overcame the dread he felt. yes thank God.

  13. when he said the song can’t escape my destiny allowed him to sing the story he wants to tell but couldn’t tell but this very song allowed him to sing it instead , it does describe his situation , mozart here like Junsu realised he was ensalved and wasn’t really free and if the cost of his freedom meant he has to let go or sacrifice his current status then be it cause he desires freedom, wants to make music he wants not being told by the bishop who didn’t treat Mozart with respect on top of ordering him around telling him to make this song and that and now and when mozart refused to be treated this way the bishop threatened him saying he would never be able to perform anywhere ever again cause he’s the bishop and if mozart crossed him then the bishop would see to mozarts career ending, that’s exactly how it happened with Junsu’s situation, sm never respected him, ordered him about giving him scheduled he had no say in, then one day he had enough and demanded respect and when sm refused this he decided to leave like mozart did and then sm threatened Junsu’s career just like the bishop did mozart now wanting to ruin the golden star.

as for the song Golden star, sm also imprisoned him, it lied to him about caring for him cause if sm did care about the idols future and him as a human being and creativity in the music field then sm wouldn’t have imprisoned him and kept him away from the world like musicals. if Junsu hadn’t left the wall sm created he wouldn’t be a musical actor he would have never experienced the beauty of musicals and get hooked on this type of music. musicals are more than lyrics, they are stories and speech said in the form of music. it connects to Junsu cause when Junsu sings he puts his feelings in the words he sings not just a pop song even when he is sinning a pop song that’s why JYJ music is desirable cause its not just songs they are feelings sung in words.

  14. Heartbreaking and Heartwarming.

We, as JYJ fans, should never forget that these men are so much more than we can see with our eyes; their maturity, sensibility, and love for each other is so amazing.

  16. i honestly think one of the best parts of the interview is the intro written by the reporter…

‘After the interview with Kim Junsu, a passage from Alphonse Daudet’s came up in my mind. It took him 7 years to find his name and open his heart. If this interview is meaningful, it’s because it lets you hear about all those years through his own voice’

Seriously such a beautiful way of phrasing what took place in junsu’s life! ❤
